Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend

I'll admit I haven't watched All My Children everyday for a very long time.  As a matter of fact, I probably haven't known who is who (who is doing who) and what everyone is doing since flipping between this and the O.J. trial.  I'm quite sure I'm several Erica husbands behind, but I honestly feel sad saying goodbye today.  All My Children is as old as me.  The show first aired in January 1970.  I was born in April 1970.  My mother was a loyal fan.  I'm pretty sure I became a fan inutero.  No matter how busy she ever became, and how many episodes she might miss, my mom always knew what was happening in Pine Valley.  That's the thing, even though I haven't watched the show in years, knowing that I could tune in and see Erica, has been comforting.  Now, the show is no more.  No more weddings, deaths, avalanches, fires, births, secret children, secret siblings, etc.  No more Erica Kane.  The irony that I will now be home in the afternoons to watch the show, is not lost here.

I've written about playing Charlie's Angels, Sonny and Cher, and Little House on Prairie as a kid  in previous posts, but I can also remember many occasions channeling Erica Kane during script readings with my sister....she was in all our high school dramas.  Of course, she and I always made reference to Erica's lipstick, too!  You know what I mean!  By the way, Susan Lucci, the actress who plays Erica, is actually 64 years old!  Man, she looks fabulous!

Characters have come and gone.  We've said goodbye to many over the years, including Phoebe, Palmer, and Myrtle.  Now I say goodbye Erica, Tad, Dixie, Angie, Adam, Stuart, Ruth, Joe, and Brooke.  Goodbye Pine Valley.

  1. Hee! This reminded me of when Another World went off the air a few years ago. It was something my mom watched her whole life, so of course, I knew it too. Sometimes, the simplist things can bond us, huh. :0)
I really love your blog and all the wonderful sewn treasures! Great photo transfer stuff!

  3. they took my favorite soap off about a year or so ago, as the world turns. I hadn't watched in many years, but I was still sad about it being off the TV. Now we have so many reality type tv shows that just aren't as interesting. I do remember being in junior high and watching All my children when I was home sick (about 1 a week or every other week) and general hospital and Days of Our Lives.

  4. Do you think she's real, or an alien. How can she look so good????? You're right, how many husbands have gone by.....she is the original drama queen! xox Corrine

  5. Wonderful post, makes me very nostalgic. Oh, my soaps du jour in my misspent youth were As The World Turns, Young and the Restless, and Guiding Light, many fond memories of those shows. Even after I began working full time, if i was home and happened across one of them, I might sit and watch. Amazingly, even after years of not watching, I could figure out what had gone on. Perhaps it was that predictability that lost the younger audience (sigh). But they still make for good memories, and yes, Susan Lucci looks pretty amazing.
