My First Quilt: DONE!

It's done! I worked all week on it and finished up my first quilt Saturday night. I ran into a few hiccups along the way, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out. My hiccups? First, I tried basting the quilt sandwich using Heat N Bond "tape" as described by Nancy Zieman in Sewing A to Z . This did not work. I guess my sandwich was too thick to heat all the way through. I went out and bought basting spray. It rocks! Problem solved! The second problem...the yellow flag, above the bird, frayed and came away from the satin stitched edge when I washed the quilt. I tried "patching" the spot, but, to me, the flaw is obvious. I'm still glad I started my quilting journey with applique. Next time, however, I will cut my pieces a little larger and make sure to watch all fabric prior to cutting and sewing!

Even with the flaws, I'm still happy with it...and pretty proud of myself for quilting it myself! All those (straight) lines! I didn't use my new walking foot for the quilting, but I did use the transparent thread I bought. Wow. It is like fishing line!

I folded the back fabric over to the front and used it for the binding. I found this method pretty easy and will use it again for my next quilt!

My First Quilt: Appliques Attached

I'm so excited about how my first quilt is coming along! It was quite a long process, but I completed attaching all the appliques using a satin stitch! I've never used this stitch on my machine before! Here are a couple of close up views:

I am very happy with the results. I had no idea my machine, a Janome 4618LE, was capable of a satin stitch! I guess I should read the owner's manual more often!

When I started this quilt project, I didn't realize that a quilt top is actually several inches smaller than the chosen batting and backing fabric. I assumed the top, batting, and backing would be the same size. My batting size is 34" X 45." My quilt top is 31" X 41 1/2." I bought my backing fabric today. I purchased 1 1/3 yards. I hope to fold over my backing fabric to use as binding. In case that doesn't work out for me, I bought a few packages of quilt binding. No, I'm not being negative about it, just realistic.

My other purchases include a walking foot, quilting needles, transparent thread (and natural colored machine quilting thread), and labels. I've never used any of these items before! Wish me luck! I'm going to start quilting as soon as my backing fabric comes out of the dryer!

My First Quilt: Cut and Ready

This past week, I began work on my first quilt! After much searching for the right first quilt, I decided the bird and bunting quilt I found at Helping Little Hands was perfect! Polly's quilt is larger than mine, but I've followed her free template for the triangle banner as well as the bird template she provides on her blog. She also provides a well written tutorial for the quilt. I cut 28 triangles out of various fabrics. Choosing the fabrics was by far the hardest part of this process so far. In the end, I decided on blue, red, and yellow.

Since I'm partial to them, I made mine a blue bird!

I think the background fabric is perfect! I'm going to start attaching my triangles as soon as I'm happy with placement. Then, I'll attach the bias binding and then the bird. Then the hard part right? Actually putting it all together and quilting!

Where To Begin?

Charlotte's Fish Transferred to Canvas and Embellished

For the past few days I've been wondering how to begin this post. It has been so hard to start since I haven't written a post since before Christmas. I haven't stayed current on anyone's blogs either. My reasons? Chaos of the the Holidays? The physical demands of total knee replacement recovery? The challenge of returning to work at the same time? I'm not sure. Probably a combination of all these, including a little bit of a funk I've gotten myself into. Luckily, with respect to my knee, I'm starting to see a little flicker of light at the end of the tunnel. I've been going to physical therapy four hours every day of the week! I have a way to go, but I'm getting stronger with every hour!

My physical recovery has been frustratingly slow. It's also been very tiring. I haven't sewn or started any other art project since Christmas. I guess that's another reason for my lack of blogger posts. Forgive me? I've got big plans to start and finish my first quilt before February 13. Stick with me and hold me to this goal! I will begin this week! In the meantime, here are a few of the projects I completed for Christmas presents:

Letter Coasters: A Tutorial

As promised, I'm posting a "how to" on making your own ceramic tile coasters using individually printed letters. The method is very similar to creating coasters using scrapbook paper, but, if you want to use printed letters, there are a few extra steps. First, let's gather the materials needed:

ceramic tiles (mine are smooth, off-white, and measure 4 1/4")
felt or cork (for these I used sticky back felt)
Mod Podge (glossy or matte)
super glue (optional)
foam brush
letters
high quality (acid free) paper
printer
spray clear acrylic sealer (I used glossy)
brayer (optional)

Buy your tiles. I found mine at Home Depot and paid $.16 each. Now, find your letters. Through Pinterest, I found a Flickr collection of letter photos. There are hundreds of photographs of all letters of the alphabet. The collection's owner states they are free to download for non-commercial use only.

Sizing the letters

Now that you have found each letter you want to use, download and save each to your Desktop (you can find them easily here). You'll have to size them before printing. Start by opening a blank WORD document and then insert your first photo. Look in the upper right on the photo above. You'll see the Crop tool. Use this tool to size your photo to a little smaller than your tile size. By using this tool, you will achieve an exact size for each square. I cropped my letters to 4.1".

Print the letters

Decide if you want your coasters to be colorful or not and then print in color or choose black and white. Print your letters on high quality paper. I used acid free resume paper, but you could used plain scrapbook paper or even card stock. In order to avoid smearing, make sure you allow the printed papers to "dry" before the next steps.

Trim the letters

Trim each letter and make sure each square will fit on the top of your tile.

Paint a thin layer of Mod Podge on tile

Adhere each letter

Adhere each letter square to the tiles. Using a foam brush, "paint" a very thin layer of Mod Podge to the top of one tile. Next, place a letter square on top of the tile. You won't have a lot of time because the thin layer of Mod Podge will dry quickly. So, make sure your letter square is straight. Use a brayer or your fingers and gently rub the paper onto the tile. Bubbles are the enemy here, so take your time and make sure there aren't any under the paper. Adhere each letter square in this fashion. Once you've completed each letter, go back to the first square and double check there are no bubbles. Then, "paint" a thicker layer of Mod Podge on top. Complete another layer on each tile. Let dry between layers. For "LORA," I used two layers of Mod Podge.

Once the tiles are dry, it's time to prepare the backs for a felt or cork covering. I used cork for one set of tiles, but I found it a bit harder to work with than sticky back felt. One package of Prestofelt costs less than $2.00 and is enough to cover four tiles.

Although the felt has a sticky back, I decided to use a couple of globs of super glue for extra strength. I placed globs of glue in each corner and one in the middle. I cut the correct size before removing the paper back from the felt. Then place the felt on the backs of each tile square. Super easy!

Seal each tile

It's time to seal the tiles, which will make them water proof. Take them outside if possible for this step. The sealant is pretty stinky. Spray a layer of sealer on each tile. Let dry and spray another layer. I used two layers, but you can do however many looks good to you. Keep in mind, however, that the more layers, the more tacky it may feel. Also, you run the risk of bubbles...they are the enemy!

Let the tiles dry completely. That's it!

Obviously you can make more tiles if the name you want to spell out is longer. A black and white version would also be very attractive. Really, the possibilities are endless...imagine using photos of a bridal couple to give as a wedding gift or photographs of your kids to give to the grandparents as gifts. These are a very simple and inexpensive project that makes a great personal gift!

Finding Christmas MoJo

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And feeling like it, too! I must confess. I usually begin the holiday season with great intentions for being "Christmasy," but I always fall short and end up feeling a little "Scroogish" by Christmas day. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it is a combination of the stress of shopping, fighting the crowds, money (spending it), as well as realizing that I'll never actually attain that same Christmas feeling I had as a child. This year, however, I'm feeling the spirit. I'm on a roll! Don't tell anyone, but I've been listening to Christmas music...and might even been singing a few songs, too! I've been crafting, sewing, decorating and baking! I can't wait to show you a few of the presents I've made, but first, what do you think of the awesome cork board pictured above? Meaghan, my Handmade Gift Exchange partner sent me a box of goodies which included the hand painted frame with an inserted cork board, handmade push pins that look like vintage typewriter keys, plus shells from the Outer Banks and hot cocoa mix from England! I absolutely love everything she sent. If you missed the photographs of the journal cover I sent Meaghan, have a look at this previous post. Participating in the Craftaholics Anonymous gift exchange has been such a great experience. I'm so happy I have gotten to know Meaghan; I feel I've made a true friend. Thanks again to Meaghan for the thoughtful gifts and to Linda for hosting the exchange!

If you are a Pinner, no doubt you've seen the pins about making your own coasters using ceramic tiles, Mod Podge and scrapbook paper. In the last few days, I've made two sets of coasters to give as gifts. I made the first set of four using scrapbook paper. I backed these with cork I had on hand.

I tried something a bit different for the next set of four. Instead of using patterned scrapbook paper, I used regular paper that I had a printed individual letters onto. Again on Pinterest, I found a link to a Flickr collection of letter photographs. After scrolling through hundreds of l's, o's, r's, and a's, I found the perfect letters to spell out, "Lora." I printed these letters and adhered them onto my 16 cent tiles.

I backed these tiles with felt. I really like how the turned out. I will be posting a "how to" in the coming days if you are interested in making your own. So, stay tuned!

Besides the coasters, I completed a few sewing projects, too. I've made two French press cozies with matching mug rugs, as well as a zebra print pillow. (I forgot to photograph the mug rugs)

Wow, where has the time gone? I haven't even gotten to show you the goodies I've been baking up! I must run for now, but look for a few scrumptious Christmas candy recipes, as well the tutorial for my version of tile coasters in my next post!

I hope you are enjoying this Holiday Season. I know the Holidays can be difficult at times for some, including myself, but, at least for the moment, I have found my Christmas Spirit...and I'm holding on tight!

Handmade Gift Exchange

In my last post, I told you a little about the Craftaholics Handmade Gift Exchange. Today, I am super excited because I get to show you the gifts I made for my partner, Meaghan! But first, let me say, "thanks" to Linda of Craftaholics Anonymous for hosting this exchange. Through her, and the gift exchange, I "met" Meaghan! We've been corresponding for the past several weeks and I feel I've made a true friend! The photo at the top of this post is of the journal cover I made for Meaghan. I used TAP (Transfer Artist Paper) to transfer the vintage lady image. I embellished the image with small beads. I tea dyed the doily and attached it using a vintage button. By the way, I sewed the journal cover to fit a standard sized composition notebook. If interested, leave a comment or send me an email and I will detail the specific dimensions and sewing directions.

Besides the journal cover I sewed. I tried my hand at a little jewelry making. You might remember I tried making a dictionary necklace charm a few weeks ago using Dimensional Magic Mod Podge. That project didn't exactly turn out, but for Meaghan's charm, I used better quality paper and a different kind of bezel. I also added a few bits of bling! This time, success!

Again, I'm so happy I participated in this gift exchange. It's been wonderful getting to know Meaghan, who lives in one of my most favorite places, North Carolina! I'm so pleased that she likes the gifts I made for her and I am excited to see what she has made for me! My package is on its way to my neck of the woods. I will post about it when it arrives. Transfer Artist Paper (TAP) Project

Where to begin? I've gone nearly another week between posts! I'm afraid I've been a slacker blogger of late. I'm sorry. I promise to get my blogging act together! So what have I been doing this past week? Well, besides the ~~torture~~, I mean, physical therapy, I organized a birthday party for my now seven year old daughter! The party was a success...even the cheetah print cakes! I also got a bit of sewing done. I completed a couple of projects for my Craftaholics Anonymous Handmade Gift Exchange partner. Unfortunately, I can't show you what I made for her just yet, but I can show you a few other sewing gifts I've made this past week. Be sure to check out all the handmade gifts exchanged at Craftaholics Anonymous in the coming weeks! My partner should be receiving her gifts soon! I hope she loves them! I can't wait to see what she has made for me, too!

I made the Fairy Journal cover for my friend, Molly. (I hope she isn't reading this post!) I used TAP (Transfer Artist Paper) to transfer the fairy image. I must say, I was pretty impressed with TAP. The image transferred to the canvas fabric perfectly! I embellished the image using beads and embroidery. I made the ear bud case for her little boy, Tucker. I found the pattern and tutorial for the case at Dog Under My Desk blog via Craft Gossip. I think it turned out cute and it was really easy, and quick, to sew. These are great for using up fabric scraps and would make great stocking stuffers, too!

For all you readers in the United States, have a terrific Thanksgiving. Enjoy your day of turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and of course pumpkin pie! I made a "practice" pie a few days ago...

pinch salt

flour until stiff

Drop in boiling soup and cook for about 15 minutes

Wow! It's been awhile! I've been MIA for over a week. I cannot say the reason for my absence is that I've been busy creating, sewing, baking, or doing anything fun. In fact, the only thing I've been busy doing is physical therapy. Having this new knee is a lot of work! "They" said I'd have ups and downs in my recovery. The last couple of weeks have been full of "downs." I've been going to ~~torture~~ therapy sessions three times a week, which actually does help, but geesh, I'm ready to be back to normal!

When not at therapy (or napping), I have been working on a few projects, mostly presents for upcoming birthdays and Christmas. I made the two image transfer cosmetic bags above and added them to my Etsy Shop last week. I've completed half of a poncho I've been knitting for my daughter. Her birthday is in a couple of weeks. I've also done a little more freezer paper stenciling.

This time, I used sparkle acrylic paint mixed with textile medium to create fabric paint. I've never tried this technique before. I think it worked pretty well, although the fabric is a little stiffer than had I used regular fabric paint. This t-shirt is for my step-daughter, Samantha. She is involved with a dance troupe at her college. I hope she likes it!

A few nights ago I read a jewelry tutorial at Marla Plain and Small. Marla's tutorial describes how to make jewelry charms using Dimensional Magic Mod Podge. I tried the technique using a silver necklace bail and paper I cut from a thesaurus.

The Dimensional Magic is actually some pretty cool stuff. It really does add dimension and the charm would have been really cool had I not used such a thin piece of paper. I think the poor quality of paper is the reason why the words on the reverse side can be seen. I will definitely try this again, but I will use higher quality paper, maybe even laminated? If any of you have used this product, let me know. I'd love some pointers!

Still Wild: Fusing Plastic!

In my last post, I managed to "build stitched layers" successfully! So, next up to try out of the Sew Wild book is Fusing Plastic! Author Alisa Burke writes that "plastic bags are easy to transform with heat." "When fused together, they create a versatile and strong surface that you can paint, alter, and use in mixed-media and sewing projects." Burke goes on to say that she likes to use Target bags for her plastic fusing projects. Unfortunately for me, I could only find one of these bags in my house. What can I say? I'm more a Walmart shopper. I have a million Walmart bags, but these bags are mostly all white (and boring), so I decided to use a few plastic sacks from my daughter's favorite store, Justice.

The instructions for this technique begin on page 68. There are basically 6 steps in this process. First, collect your plastic sacks and cut the bottoms and the handles off. Next, stack the bags on top of a scrap piece of fabric. Smooth out any wrinkles and then place another piece of scrap fabric on top. With your iron on low, "press slowly back and forth across the surface." Once the pieces are fused together, remove the scrap fabric pieces and your fused plastic is "ready to stitch or paint."

So, was it really this easy? Yes, for the most part. However, I think because the Justice bag plastic is heavier or thicker than that of Target or Walmart bags, the low setting on my iron didn't cut it. I had to crank it up a bit and press relatively hard to achieve fusion. Using a zigzag stitch and hot pink thread, I made a quick wallet using my fused plastic.

I didn't plan it, but I like how the words, "be positive" and "share your light" ended up on the inside of the wallet. Pretty cool huh?

Okay, another Sew Wild project completed! What's next? How about glue resist?! Sounds fun!

Sewing Wild

Sew Wild by Alisa Burke

I've gone wild! Well, maybe unrestrained might be a better word to describe my stitching style for the past couple of days. A few weeks ago, I bought Alisa Burke's Sew Wild. This book is about Burke's style, her process and "messy approach to sewing." Throughout the first part of the book, Burke describes different surface design techniques including using paints and inks, dyes, glue and bleach. Burke discusses different stitching tools and is a big advocate of using the darning needle, or free motion foot, on your sewing machine. She also explores color theory and pattern. There is also a section in the book about finding inspiration for your design. Burke uses a variety of techniques to create several different projects, including a hat, bag, scarf, and a quilt. Burke encourages us to Go Wild!

I decided to release my inner wild woman and create a panel of stitched layers. This lesson begins on page 82. Basically sew bits and pieces of fabric, in layers, on top of a background fabric. Burke uses her own fabrics, those she has created using paints, dyes, etc. Since I haven't created my own fabrics, I used scraps left over from my Mug Rug. I started with about a 12" X 12" piece of muslin, backed with batting, and then began laying out my scraps in a rough layout.

I stitched the scraps down using straight and zig zag stitches. Next, I took smaller scraps and placed them on top, in between to fill in the spaces. I sewed these pieces with varying stitches as well. I got a little ~~messy~~ wild here.

Before I was finished, I sewed even more black lines all over the piece! I decided to make a little bag, so I cut a square from the piece and whipped up a 4" X 4" Shabby Chic Scrap Coin Purse. I added a little frayed edged fabric flower. I've added this little purse to my Etsy Shop!

Although I'm pleased with my results, I must say it wasn't that easy for me to get Wild and Messy! Don't get me wrong, I've been known to "wing" some sewing instructions and measurements, but purposely being messy is hard! It was difficult to "let go," but it was fun. I really like this book and will definitely try more techniques, including stenciling, masking, and monotype printing! So, look for more posts about the projects in Sew Wild. First up: Fusing Plastic! Doesn't that sound fun?! I'm off to round up Target bags!

A Sew Loquacious Handmade Holiday

Halloween is in one week. There are 33 days until Thanksgiving! There are 62 days until Christmas and 69 days until New Year's! What are you planning for the Holidays this year? I recently posted about my pledge to contribute to handmade charity this season as well as my plan to either make or give handmade gifts this holiday season. With this handmade pledge in mind, I've decided to document my Handmade Holiday here on my blog.

The The Sew Loquacious Handmade Holiday will include sewn, knit, or otherwise handcrafted gifts, as well as food ideas. What are the most memorable gifts you received or gave? I am certain that most were handmade. I remember my grandmother giving all her grandchildren crocheted slippers one year. I wore mine until they had holes in the soles! When I was in my 20's, my mother made pajamas for everyone. I still have the pair she made for me! Holiday baking always evokes memories of my childhood. My mother made divinity every year. Truth be told, I hate divinity, but she also made fudge, almond bark covered pretzels and Party Mix.

I've also managed to get into my sewing room to work on two birthday gifts. I tried my hand at freezer paper stencils.

I bought two ready made shirts and cut about 2 inches off the bottom. I then sewed fabric/ruffles to them after painting the stencils. I'm really pleased with how they both turned out. I made a yo yo for the top shirt. It is attached with a button pin so it can be removed for easier washing. I had a lot of fun doing the stencils and I am still amazed how well the freezer paper works!

Flea Market Friday...Tuesday

I haven't written a Flea Market Friday post in ages. Actually, since January! It was shortly after this last post that my work scheduled changed and I was no longer off on Fridays. No longer was I able to visit flea markets, antique malls, garage sales and estate sales...on Fridays, anyway. Well, guess what? It's Friday and today I am posting about some of the great finds I came across at a local antique mall I visited. Okay, I visited the mall on Tuesday, not Friday. (Since I am off work recovering from my knee surgery, Tuesday could be Friday, Thursdays can be Saturdays! Who cares!) It was a short visit, as it's still difficult for me to get around. I've "graduated" to a cane, but it's still difficult to "walk" around and my knee is still quite sore. Anyway, I came across a lot of "stuff" in the mall. Here is a small sample:

In previous Flea Market Friday excursions, I usually focused on one style, element, or item. For example, during one trip, I focused on handbags. Although I didn't lean toward one thing during today's trip, I seemed to be partial to tea pots. I even bought a tea set. I'm not sure how "vintage" it is, but I think the set is pretty neat. It is a set of 6 cups and saucers, cream and sugar dishes, and the tea pot. It is designed with a dragon motif, which is textural. The pieces are stamped "Japan" on the bottoms.

So why did I visit the antique mall on Tuesday? It was my anniversary! My husband, who is off work to "take care of me," and I went to lunch and then stopped at the antique mall. I can't believe it's been another year. I posted about our seven year anniversary last year! Here's to 8! Time really does fly!

Something's Brewing...A Halloween Swap

It's time to show off the great "stuff" I received from my Bloggerette Sorority sister, Wendy at Bliss Angels! I'm pretty certain Halloween is one of Wendy's most favorite holidays! She sent me a box full of Halloween goodies!

A Christmas Commitment

I've been thinking a lot about Christmas lately. Pinterest is probably a major reason for my Yuletide thoughts as is my obsessive browsing on Etsy. I've decided this will be a handmade year. I've pledged to either make gifts myself or buy handmade. I've also pledged to be involved in charitable giving this year. Every year I "plan" to get involved in a charity, but time always seems to get away from me (insert another excuse here) and my plan fails. This year, however, is going to be different. No excuses. There are 70 days until Christmas. Let the Christmas countdown commence!

I've done a bit of research and have come up with a list of organizations in need of handmade items for the person(s) they serve. Have a look through this list. I'm sure you'll find one or two that might help you decide to get involved, too!

Project Linus volunteers, also called, Blanketeers, make blankets for kids who are seriously ill. These handmade blankets can be quilts, crocheted, knitted, or even made tied fleece. There are Project Linus chapters in every state.

ConKerr Cancer accepts handmade pillowcases. These cases are then given to kids who are battling cancer. There are ConKerr Cancer chapter nationwide.

The Ships Project is an organization supporting America's military troops. They accept handmade knitted socks, knitted or crocheted slippers and hats.

Soldiers' Angels Sewing Team also helps out America's military persons. There are multiple ways to help this organization, but the Sewing Team works to make blankets, sand and "cool" scarves as well as pillowcases.

Binky Patrol is a national organization of volunteers who make and distribute handmade blankets to kids currently in foster care, children born HIV +, infected with AIDS, abused, or chronically or terminally ill. The blankets can be sewn, crocheted or knitted.

Threads of Compassion is a group of sexual violence survivors based in Chicago. They support "new" victims by giving them handmade (knit or crochet) scarves when they enter a hospital for emergency treatment.

Compassionate Creations is a Massachusetts chapter of Threads of Compassion. This group also helps victims of domestic violence and accepts lap squares (18" to 30" square) and wristbands as well as knit or crocheted scarves.

Carewear volunteers sew, knit, or crochet handmade baby items for hospitals. There is a huge list of links and patterns on the Carewear website.

Wrap Them in Love is an organization that collects and distributes donated quilts to kids around the world. This group is based in Washington.

The Shawl Ministry website has a lot of information (and patterns) about joining and or starting your own Shawl Ministry.

Obviously this list is only a small percentage of charitable organizations in need of handmade items. If you are involved in one not listed, please let me know. I will create a page just for these links. No excuses. We can all get involved this year!

A New Look, Part II

By now you've probably noticed the changes I have been making to my blog. I've lost count on how many times I've changed the header in the past week! I've been playing around in Photoshop and I came up with the character in the header as well as along the sidebars. Please grab my new blog button! I'm thinking of naming my new little characters. Any suggestions?

So why all the changes to my blog? It's time, I guess. I really love the vintage images I have used since I started blogging, but I want to try something new, fresh, and a little funky! I hope you stick with me through these changes. I am really excited about the new look and new ideas I have regarding posts about sewing, knitting, art, food, books, and more! Speaking of knitting, I've almost finished the scarf I started a few days ago. Look for it in my Etsy Shop in a few days! Unfortunately I haven't been able to get into my sewing studio yet, but I think I'll be able to get to it by the weekend. Thanks so much for your comments and emails wishing me a speedy recovery!

Yo Yo Mountain

So what is it like having a new knee? It hurts! I've had a rough time since my last post. The pain and swelling have been pretty severe. I'm still confident, however, that it will get better and my recovery will be back on track asap!

I haven't been able to get into my sewing room, but have made a mountain of Yo Yos and started a new knitting project. I've also joined Pinterest. I had seen references to being "pinned," on different blogs, but hadn't visited the site until a few days ago. I haven't "pinned" a lot of things yet, but I'm starting to get the hang of it! Are you on Pinterest? Let me know. I'd love to see your boards!

A New Blog Look

Notice a few changes? You probably know by now that when I make blog design changes, it usually means I am immobile or otherwise not able to get to my sewing machine easily! The most obvious change is my header. Usually mannequins creep me out a bit, but I thought these were a little quirky and not at all scary. You might notice a new profile picture, too. That's actually me. Surprised? I added my "Pages" or Categories under the header. I need to do a little more tweaking here. I'm sure there is a way to make the gadgets spaced or aligned better. There also has to be a way to add images here! Since I'm pretty much stuck on my butt, I have plenty of time to explore the blogosphere for tips and tricks for more tweaking!

Thanks to everyone who sent "get well" emails and or left me sweet comments regarding my knee surgery. My surgery went well and I came home from hospital Saturday afternoon. All and all my hospital experience was pretty good. All the nurses and techs were great and treated me really well. Oh, and my Japanese Fabric Slippers were a huge hit as was my Walker Caddy! I have a long recovery road ahead, but I feel good and I'm looking forward to a new lease on life with my new knee. Maybe this is another reason for changing up a few design elements on my blog. A new knee, a new, positive, outlook on my art, craft, and life in general. Too cheesey? Over sentimentalism might be pain pill side effect?

Besides making changes to the Sew Loquacious blog design, I've made several Yo Yos today. I convinced my husband to bring me a few bags of fabric scraps, my Yo Yo makers, a pair of scissors, and needle and thread. Yo Yos are so easy to make, especially with the templates! I'm hoping to make it into my sewing room soon, but in the meantime, I'm happy making these little circles! I also have my eye on knitting a few scarves while I on the mend!

Love Coin Purse

Tomorrow is D-Day! I've been waiting (and wishing for) this day for a long time, but, if I'm honest, I'm actually a bit nervous. Why? I'm not really sure. I've been keeping myself busy the last few days for a few reasons...I want things organized when I get home from the hospital and I'm keeping my mind from wondering off to the "what ifs" of my knee surgery. I've completed several sewing projects, including a couple of coin purses.

I made this little bag for a friend's daughter, Nina. She is a huge Big Time Rush fan. In case you were wondering, BTR is a boy band from Nickelodeon Channel. I made the BTR coin purse using an iron on patch I purchased. I then hand stamped "Nina" using my alphabet stamps and fabric ink. I listed my "Love" coin purse Monday afternoon in my Etsy Shop and it sold within about thirty minutes! Very exciting!

I've also completed a "secret project" for the Bloggerette Sorority Sisters Halloween Swap. I can't show you what I made, however because it is SECRET until after all the projects are mailed and received. Then participants will write and post photos of their projects. They will also reveal their partners at that time. So stay tuned! All the projects are due on October 11. You can click on the link to the Bloggerette page and you'll find a list of the participants as well as more information about the swap, etc.

Okay, don't laugh. I made a couple of walker totes! My doctor said I'll be sporting a walker for three or four weeks, so I figured why not make a caddy in order to carry some magazines, hand sewing, knitting, etc.! I used Simplicity 2822. The pattern was surprisingly easy. It was much like just making a regular tote bag. In the photos, I've attached the bags to the back of one of my chairs as I don't have my walker...yet!

Saying Goodbye to an Old Friend

I'll admit I haven't watched All My Children everyday for a very long time. As a matter of fact, I probably haven't known who is who (who is doing who) and what everyone is doing since flipping between this and the O.J. trial. I'm quite sure I'm several Erica husbands behind, but I honestly feel sad saying goodbye today. All My Children is as old as me. The show first aired in January 1970. I was born in April 1970. My mother was a loyal fan. I'm pretty sure I became a fan inutero. No matter how busy she ever became, and how many episodes she might miss, my mom always knew what was happening in Pine Valley. That's the thing, even though I haven't watched the show in years, knowing that I could tune in and see Erica, has been comforting. Now, the show is no more. No more weddings, deaths, avalanches, fires, births, secret children, secret siblings, etc. No more Erica Kane. The irony that I will now be home in the afternoons to watch the show, is not lost here.

I've written about playing Charlie's Angels, Sonny and Cher, and Little House on Prairie as a kid in previous posts, but I can also remember many occasions channeling Erica Kane during script readings with my sister....she was in all our high school dramas. Of course, she and I always made reference to Erica's lipstick, too! You know what I mean! By the way, Susan Lucci, the actress who plays Erica, is actually 64 years old! Man, she looks fabulous!

For the Love of Fabric & Friends

Have I mentioned how much I love Etsuko Fuyura fabric? Yes, a million times! I'll make it one million and one...I love Etsuko Fuyura fabric! You might remember that I used it to make a a purse for my daughter a few months ago. This past weekend, a dear friend sent me a little box of goodies, which included an Echino Ni-Co 2011 by Etsuko Furuya Natural fat quarter bundle! Heaven! I chose the first FQ to make myself a pair of slippers. I think they are beyond awesome!

I used Simplicity 2278 for my slippers. I stayed true to the pattern, however I chose not to use Jiffy Grip for the bottoms. Instead, I used a suede-like fabric. My feet will be toasty and look good during my hospital stay next week! Who said you can't look hip and trendy when you are getting a new knee? (Would have been funnier if I was getting a new hip instead of a knee!) Thanks again to my friend for my treasure box. You know who you are and just how great you are!

I completed a few more bags and added them to my Etsy Shop. The image transfers turned out great. The first bag is coin purse size. Doesn't Nixon look cool? The other two are flat bottom cosmetic bags. Who doesn't love bras and shoes?

Thanks for the great feedback about my iPad Curse! Writing up a tutorial for one is on my list of things to get done before next week. So, stay tuned!

The "Curse" is a Hit!

Ok, so I finished the "Curse" prototype last weekend. Basically it is an iPad pocket attached to the inside of a messenger bag. The first Curse, or prototype (not shown), I made to fit the wearer vertically. The wearer, my friend and hairdresser, Dana, said the size was perfect and she liked all the pockets, but she felt this vertical style hung a bit too long on her. So, I tweaked a few of my measurements and turned the bag onto it's side. Inside the Curse is the iPad pocket, which is secured with a flap and magnetic snap. Opposite this pocket are two additional large pockets.

Here is Dana's feedback email:

"Okey dokey, the maiden voyage with the curse was a huge success! The weight distributes nicely, the pouch keeps the iPad from moving around and that's great for keeping the bag from swinging around or moving while I'm walking. I was literally able to forget i was even carrying it. I like the space behind the pouch for the cords and the flap that closes the curse keeps anything from falling out so I wouldn't fix what isn't broken and tack or close it. The purse section is perfect. I go to Houston next week so I'm going to use it on the trip. I'll let you know how it travels but I can't imagine that it won't be perfect for what I need. You're a genius!"

In case you were wondering about the change on my profile picture...that's actually my mom. I was going through old photos and came across this one. I think it's an awesome photo. The 7th anniversary (I hate that word) of her death is in a few days. I miss her everyday.

Ah, there is a definite fall smell in the air this morning! The current temperature outside my home is 62 and the high is only supposed to be in the low 70's. Awesome! Of course this is the mid-west and the weather can change drastically within hours. Anyway, for now, it's superb! Speaking of the mid-west, I want to let you know that I have joined the Kansas Etsy Team! I'm really excited about being a part of the team, meeting fellow Kansas Etsians, learning from them, and generally spreading the word about Kansas' artisans! Cool huh? One fellow team member is my friend, Liza, from MacKomics Studio. Liza is a genuine artist and all round cool gal. She lives in Lawrence and hosts artist events every week. What have you been working on this Labor Day weekend? I started this little embroidery sample a few days ago and finished up last night. I think she's pretty cute, but I sort of wish I would have used red, or a darker color, for her hat and dress. I'll try this again. A perfect project for when I'm laid up after my knee surgery!

I've also been working on a "Curse." This is the word my friend used to describe the kind of bag she is looking for. She wants a case for her iPad as well as a purse for her other stuff she carries with the iPad. So, I'm experimenting with a messenger style bag that will carry her iPad securely, her purse items, while not bulking, as well as the power source for the iPad. I've made a sort of inside pocket for the iPad and, hopefully, will get a chance to work on the rest of the Curse later today.

And The Bag Goes To....

Congratulations to Liza from MacKomics Studio! Liza won my bag giveaway! Liza can now choose any bag in my Etsy Shop and it's her's! In case you missed it, this giveaway was my way to celebrate the opening (finally) of my Etsy Shop! I'm so thrilled with the feedback I gotten back about my shop! Guess what? I made my first online sale over the weekend! I'm still learning the ins and outs of Etsy, specifically, tags, labels, categories, "circles," etc. I'm still not sure how to add more tags and what they should be in order to get my views, but I'm sure I'll sort it out soon! I'll have plenty of time for an Etsy education pretty soon. More about that in the next paragraph, so keep reading! Again, I just want to say, "thanks" to my fellow Etsy sellers for adding me to their circles and helping me spread the word about my shop!

I also want to thank everyone who commented or sent me emails in response to my last post about my weight loss. Your words of encouragement really help to keep me motivated. I'll let you in on the real reason I've been trying to lose weight and get into shape. I'm scheduled for total knee replacement surgery next month! If you are a regular reader, you'll remember that I had knee surgery this past March. I had the hardware removed that had been replaced a few years ago. You could say I had a screw loose! Well, that surgery really kicked my butt. My recovery was slow and hard. It made me realize, however, that I needed to get into shape before the "biggie" surgery. So, that's my reason for my latest diet and exercise plan. After all, I do not want to hobble into rehab post surgery and have the 70 and 80 year old patients outdo me! Embarrassing! Seriously, I am happy I am finally going to have a new knee. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

I'll be placing into my shop soon. For the record, the pleating, along with the "recessed" zipper...not so easy. Oh, I'm looking for a pattern or online tutorial for a laundry bag / backpack. Vintage Sewing

I slipped away today to one of my favorite antique malls. I came home with a few old sewing books, like the one pictured above. It's from 1958! I also picked up a few not so old recipe books. I think they are from the early 1990s and they are full of low calorie recipes. I know, not very exciting, but I'm committed to sticking to this diet. I've lost nearly 20 pounds and am motivated, finally, to getting fit and staying healthy. By the way, August is the third anniversary of being a quitter...a non-smoker, that is. Woot woot!

Well, it's finally happened! Yep, I opened my Etsy shop! It was a long time coming, I know. I "opened" my shop at the end of last week and I've been slowly, but surely, adding new items almost everyday. Hopping To More Bags!

I'm taking a break from Shark Week to share a few photos of some of my latest projects. First, the above bunny. Yes, it's a bunny. I tried my hand at felting this afternoon. A few weeks ago, I saw Isabella Hoffman on Sewing With Nancy. She was felting with a felting machine, which actually looked like a sewing machine except without thread or a bobbin! How cool! I couldn't go out and buy one of those machines, so I bought a hand felting tool and mat. I used freezer paper to make the bunny shape on a tan colored piece of felt. I then placed the bunny shape on a piece of wool and then went to town with the felting needle tool. It was fun. I'm going to play around a bit more with Mr. Bunny and maybe even add some shading with the fabric markers. Sidenote: It seems kind of weird to be crafting with wool and felt when it is so hot outside! Oh well!

I want to show you a few more of the zippy bags I've finished. I transferred images to all of them and then embellished with yo-yo's, rick rack, beads, free motion embroidery, buttons and lace. More stuff for my yet-to be opened Etsy Shop!

New Image Transfer Zippy Bags

Is it Friday yet? Wow, it's only Monday and I am so ready for the weekend! I got a few bags completed this past Saturday and I want to get back into my sewing studio to keep it going. I got to spend most of the day in my sewing studio. It was so great....just me and my Janome. I finished up a few "free-motion" bags as well as a couple of image transferred zippy bags, including the one pictured above. I embellished the Cowgals bag with some beads and embroidery, as well as some ribbon on the bottom. Here is a look at the back of the bag as well as the inside:

I transferred another image, this one depicting an old bicycle messenger service. I didn't embellish this image. Instead, I "patchworked" the back of the bag.

"Adams Express"

You might recognize the fabric I used for the rear of the bag. It's that scrumptious Etsuko Fuyura designed Echino fabric I used for my daughter's Sweet Pea purse. Still love that fabric!

I am really pleased with how the images transferred. I still think the results achieved using the gel medium transfer method is so much better than printing directly onto computer "fabric." It's just more genuine, if that makes sense. Anyway, read through my Image Transfer Tutorial and give it a try...I think you'll be really impressed!

Stay cool everyone! It was officially 104 degrees outside as I drove home this afternoon...and I just heard tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day of the year!! Ugh!

My Folk Art Dress

Tomorrow begins another new month...August! Can you believe how fast July has flown by? Time seems to move faster and faster, I guess, as we age. Bummer. But, I am looking forward to school starting later in the month and getting back to normal routine. I'm also looking forward to designing my August dress. The Artist Theme for August is Pointillism . I'm very excited about that! July's Theme has been Folk Art. Folk Art is fun and encompasses many different mediums. I based my July dress on matching outfits my mother made my sister and me when we were kids. I remember wearing my Little House on the Prairie dress on that Christmas shown in the photo. That's me on the right (brown hair). My Folk Art Dress is blue and has that patchwork, quilt look to it that reminds me of my Laura Ingalls dress. Sidenote: My sister and I played Little House and, of course, I played Laura and she was Mary as she had blonde hair and older.

POINTILLISM

Pointillism is a form of painting in which tiny dots of primary-colors are used to generate secondary colors. It is an offshoot of Impressionism, and is usually categorized as a form of Post-Impressionism. It is very similar to Divisionism, except that where Divisionism is concerned with color theory, Pointillism is more focused on the specific style of brushwork used to apply the paint.

The term "Pointillism" was first used with respect to the work of Georges Seurat, and he is the artist most closely associated with the movement. The relatively few artists who worked in this style also included Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross. Excerpt taken from Artcyclopedia.

According to Wikipedia, Pointillism is a technique of painting in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form an image. Georges Seurat developed the technique in 1886, branching from Impressionism. The term Pointillism was first coined by art critics in the late 1880s to ridicule the works of these artists, and is now used without its earlier mocking connotation.

Fabric Inspiration

Have I mentioned how hot it has been in my neck of the woods? Yes, I know I have. It is so hot and humid here in the Mid West that I'm having flash backs to a few summers ago when my family and I flew to Puerto Vallarta. I am not over-dramatizing here... I actually thought I would die on that vacation. I dreamed of diving into snow banks instead of the pool, which was more like warm bath water than anything remotely refreshing! It was beyond hot there! Here is the lesson I learned: DO NOT book a vacation to P.V. in July! Better yet, never book a vacation to Puerto Vallarta! Okay, that may be a little harsh. Maybe P.V. is nice in December??

Rant over. I want to show you a few fabrics I picked up during my recent vacation to Branson, Missouri. I shopped two fabulous fabric stores to find these yummy goodies:

"ERA-C" by Timeless Treasures Fabrics

I don't know the names of the fabrics pictured in the last two photos. They both look "vintage-y" and I love them! If you are ever in Branson, Missouri, be sure to shop at Quilts and Quilts and The Fabric and Decor Shop!

Besides the gorgeous fabric, I also bought a Get Hooked: Rugs From Scraps "kit." The kit includes pattern instructions and a large crochet hook. I haven't started a rug yet because I'm a bit concerned as I didn't really think the included crochet hook was actually going to be used for crocheting! I thought it was probably going to be used as a kind of latch hook type tool. Yet, after skimming the first pattern direction, it is clear there is actual crochet involved here. The label reads, "No Experience Necessary-Very Easy." Hmmm. We'll see. I can't crochet. I've tried. I even took an online crochet course a few months ago. I managed to crochet (loosely said) a few amoeba-shaped flower-like "things," but that's it. That all said, I'm going to give it a go because I thought it would be a fabulous way to use up fabric scraps. I'm a hoarder; I can't bear to throw out my scraps. I was also inspired to try this because of my visit to the College of the Ozarks, specifically, Edwards Mill and Weaving Studio, located on the Branson, Missouri campus. There, I saw students weaving placemats and blankets on large looms. Their work was so intricate. I didn't take any pictures as they were working in the studio, but I found a few photos on other sites showing the looms.

Besides the Mill and Weaving Studio, there is also a fruitcake and jelly kitchen, an orchid greenhouse, and a museum on the campus. As a matter of fact, inside the Ralph Foster Museum, you can see the Beverly Hillbillies car as well as numerous dolls, including those made by Rose O'Neill, the creator of the Kewpie Doll! Fun fact: O'Neill's Missouri home, Bonniebrook, is located about 10 minutes outside Branson.

I sound like a tourism ad for Branson, huh? I actually learned a lot about that area of the country during my trip. For example, I had no idea so many great artists called that part of Missouri home! Some of these artists include Jesse Barnes, Thomas Hart Benton, Thomas P. Bennett, among others!

What Makes Sewing Your Own Stuff Great?

Is it hot enough for you? Honestly, if one more person asks me that, I might scream! Yes, as a matter of fact, it is hot enough for me! It is day 3 or 4 (I've lost track) of being under an "excessive heat warning." While earlier this summer I proved my theory that tan fat is definitely more attractive than ultra white fat, excessive sweating is not attractive in either hue! Enough whining. I am thankful it is summer and not winter!

Since my last post, I've made a zippy bag using the Owl and Pussycat embroidery I completed. I used an owl fabric for the back of the bag and a multicolored polka dot fabric for the lining. I attached a super cute owl charm to use as a zipper pull. I think the bag turned out pretty cute!

Amid the cool conditioned air inside my studio, I also made up a quick bag using the fabrics I bought on vacation a few weeks ago. I really like how the fabrics go together. Overall I like the pattern, too. However, I think I made the strap too long. I do like to carry my purse across my body, like a messenger bag, but I don't think that a longer strap is suited for this particular style of bag. So, I am going to shorten the strap and carry it just on my shoulder. That's what so great about sewing your own bags, clothes, etc. If you don't like it, you can alter it any which way you want!

I'm still working on my embroidery skills. I really enjoy that actual sewing part of the projects, but I am NOT a fan of separating floss! I guess that's part of the process!

An Owl and a Pussycat: More Embroidery and Applique

Hope everyone is having a great "short" week! I've been super busy at work and at home, but I wanted to check in and post a few pictures of what I've been working on whenever I've been able to sneak away for a few crafty minutes. This is basically an experiment in free motion embroidery (flag banner), rough edged applique (flag banner), "regular" applique (brown "tree limb"), and hand embroidery (cat and owl). I used sequins for the eyes and I'm afraid my little owl looks a bit cross-eyed! Maybe he needs glasses?

Just for the record, An Owl and a Pussycat is my first attempt at real embroidery. It was sure slow going. I've started the Embroidery Project classes I won, but I'm a few weeks behind. I'm excited about the projects I've seen so far; I just hope I can catch up!

Embroidery and Applique!

Guess what? I won! Backstory: A few days ago I was reading about The Embroidery Project, an online embroidery class, on one of my favorite new blogs, Wild Olive. From there, I hopped over to a "new to me" blog called Ooh Leela and I entered to win a spot in the online embroidery class. And...I won! I am super excited about learning proper embroidery skills. If you've read my blog in recent months, you know that I've been embroidering embellishments on my image transfer bags. I've also been experimenting with free motion embroidery, too. But, I haven't taken any classes, etc. In other words, I've been winging it all this time. Now, I'm going to actually learn how to do the different stitches the right way!

I've been pretty lazy this holiday weekend. If you can believe it, I've only just finished the laundry from our vacation return last Sunday!! I did get a chance to get into my sewing studio Saturday, however. I worked on a few zippy bag fronts, including the above tattoo inspired applique. I also made a quilt inspired front and a quirky "Spot of Tea" inspired bag front. I think they turned out pretty cute....even if I finished them before I start my embroidery class!

When these bags are finished, they will be about 7" X 6". I'm also adding charms to the zipper pulls. More stuff for my Etsy Shop!!

July's Dress Up Theme Is...

In celebration of Independence Day, July's Dress Up theme is Folk Art! According to Wikipedia : "Folk art encompasses art produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople."

Basically, this means that Folk Art is different than Fine Art because it is (and was) made for utilitarian purposes rather than "just to look at." Wikipedia also says, "Folk art expresses cultural identity by conveying shared community values and aesthetics. It encompasses a range of utilitarian and decorative media, including cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal and more. If traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms. Folk art reflects traditional art forms of diverse community groups — ethnic, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age- or gender-based — who identify with each other and society at large. Folk artists traditionally learn skills and techniques through apprenticeships in informal community settings, though they may also be formally educated." Folk Art exists in all cultures, but I typically think Americana when I think Folk. I guess that's because I am an American. Here are some examples of Folk Art:

The first example is obviously a portrait painting. The second is a quilt top made during the U.S. Civil War, and the third example is stitch needlework. I chose this theme to celebrate the American holiday, which is Monday, July 4. This doesn't, however, mean you must complete your dress with Americana in mind. You may use whatever Folk Art is indigenous to your neck of the woods...Brazil, South Africa, Canada, etc.! If you want to base your design on American Folk, you can find a lot of examples at the American Folk Art Museum.

A Summer Knitted Scarf

I hate unpacking! I've spent my evening unpacking from my vacation. Three loads of laundry later, I'm writing this post. My vacation was great. It wasn't, however, low-key as originally planned. We were on the go nearly the entire trip! It was a lot of fun, but now I'm afraid I need another vacation just to recuperate from this one!

I had planned to get in some sewing on my vacation and even brought my sewing machine with me. Alas, I didn't get much done other than these few bag pieces, which I pieced and machine "free" embroidered.

I will use each piece as the "fronts" of zippy bags. I didn't get the bags themselves completed, but plan on working on them, and others, as soon as I get my trip "stuff" organized and put away. I did accomplish one goal on the trip.....I finished knitting the scarf I started months ago! I worked on this scarf almost every time I rode in the car and finished it during the ride home yesterday. Here are a few more views.

I still can't remember the name of this lace stitch, but it was pretty easy...just time consuming. I wrote a post detailing the pattern and the yarn I used in March. I think it turned out really pretty and the organic yarn is scrumptious. I am also really pleased that I actually finished this project. Here's a secret....I am notorious for not completing knitting projects I start! Don't tell.

The dryer is buzzing, time to put another load in. Keep in touch...I will be posting the details for July's Dress Up. Here's a hint: Think 4th of July! Oh, and I will post some more vacation pictures...one of them may even involve me and a hula hoop!

A Giant Rooster? Oh Yeah!

Last year's first vacation post photo was of an Elvis impersonator. This year...it's a giant rooster! Welcome to Branson, Missouri!

We went horsebacking riding yesterday. It was awesome. Charlotte's horse was named, Abby. Mine was called, Rebel and my husband had, "Arnold." The ride was terrific. The trail was rugged, but the horses knew what and where they were going. We walked along a stream..and crossed it. Rebel even trotted a bit. Perfect.

After the ride, my husband dropped me off at a huge quilt/fabric shop. I was in heaven. I bought a book about embroidery and one on painting on fabric. I also bought some really cool fabric. What made it even cooler, was that it was on sale!

After the quilt shop, a giant flea market! I didn't buy anything here, but did find a few interesting pieces.

Embroidery: Hand vs Free Motion Machine

I am officially on vacation again! Pretty cool getting to be on vacation for two weeks then go to work for a week and then get to be on vacation again for a week! I plan on soaking up the sun, spending a lot of time at the pool, thrift and antique mall shopping, and sewing! I am taking my sewing machine on vacation! Weird? Maybe, but I want to continue working on "stuff" for my soon to be opened Etsy shop!

A little wrinkly, but I hope you can see the hand embroidery I did in order to embellish the ladies. Speaking of embroidery, I've been experimenting a bit with free motion machine embroidery. Here is one bag I completed:

There will be plenty of internet access during this vacation, so I hope to post great photos of my travels and whatever cool stuff I come across!

Fabulous Flea Market Finds

My vacation/stay-cation ends tonight. Boo. A few more hours and then it's back to work. Yuk. I have had a very nice time these past two weeks. I have camped, canoed, eaten s'mores, and swam. I've gotten tan and a few bug bites. I've also gotten to hang out with my family and I've loved that! I also got to sneak into a few of my favorite flea markets and junk shops. That's where I found the Singer Sewing Machine Book.

This book was copyrighted in 1954, but I believe it was given as a gift to "Eleanor" in 1957 because of the inscription:

I just love finding old handwritten notes. It's so personal, isn't it? Besides this awesome book, I also came across some pretty cool purses:

While this vacation is almost over, I have another week scheduled the week after Father's Day. So, I guess I shouldn't complain too much!

Summer Pretties

So I'm still on vacation; or should I say, stay-cation. No primitive campsites, no pristine river water, no bugs and unfortunately, no room service. I'm actually enjoying my time at home with my littlest daughter. We've been hanging out at our neighborhood pool and playing on our trampoline. Okay, she's been playing on the trampoline. We even braved the heat and visited the zoo! It was so hot and we walked our feet off, but we got to see a few of her favorite animals, including all sorts of different monkeys and even a few lions!

Her favorite animal is the cheetah, but for some unknown reason, they weren't out, so the next best animal was the leopard. If you look hard, you can see him lying down under that tree. She drew her interpretation of the leopard after we got home. Did you know that leopards have brown spots within their black spots and cheetahs just have black spots? Now you know!

In this, my last week of my stay-cation, I've made a few summer pretties for my youngest. I made a simple halter using McCall's Easy Stitch and Save #5562. Note to self: Remember you hate doing ruffles. Pick another view next time.

I made View B, the ruffled top. It turned out pretty cute, but the ruffle was a pain. I figured making the ruffle would be less of a pain than sewing the bias tape on the bottom for View C. I may have chosen unwisely. Anyway, it's done and Charlotte loves it!

I've also made this halter type dress during my time off. She actually wore this dress on the zoo trip, which was perfect since it was so hot. I made two of these dresses. One for Charlotte and the other for her friend, Halle. They were little twins at the zoo!

Adjustable Fabric Strap Tutorial Update

It seems like ages ago that I wrote my first sewing tutorial. It was actually in March last year that I posted a tutorial based on Nancy Zieman's adjustable fabric straps for purses and bags. I hadn't realized until relatively recently that many crafters have come to my blog and some even became "followers" after seeing my tutorial on other websites and blogs, including Craft Gossip and Totally Tutorials. So, I'm really grateful to those sites and others for re-posting this tutorial. I'm also thankful to Nancy Z. Without watching her show on my local PBS channel, I'm not sure I would have even thought that I could make my own purse, let alone adjustable straps. She is my sewing hero.

So why am I talking about this tutorial? Well, over the past year, a few people have emailed me in frustration regarding the instructions. I've tried to explain the steps via email to them, but I'm afraid these steps are best understand through pictures. I'd actually like to make a video and post it, but I'm certain I'm not to that level of blogging just yet! Carla is one of those frustrated emailers. Instead of trying to explain the steps in an email, I've decided to re-do some of the steps that are probably the most confusing and write an "updated" tutorial here. Please note that I have used fabric scraps and haven't even used matching scraps for the slides. I also have not used interfacing here, which is actually really important for successful adjustable straps. Please review the original tutorial for more detail regarding measurements, interfacing, etc. Let's get to it!

1. I first cut two pieces of fabric 2 1/2" wide X 18" long. You will also make two fabric slides. You'll want these a half (or more) narrower than your completed straps. You'll need to make sure you make them long enough to cover the width of the strap plus 1/4".

2. Next, I folded and ironed the long ends toward the middle. I did this on both straps. NOTE: You would iron interfacing to the long pieces before folding if you were making actual straps for your bag. Again, the interfacing you use here is really important. Here's an inside secret: I always use Dritz Perfect Waist Maker instead of regular interfacing for my bag straps.

3. Now fold over your strap in order to find the middle. Press to mark this spot.

4. Now, just below this fold, open the strap and measure. You are going to make your fabric slides about 1/4" longer than the width of the opened (and NOT sewn) fabric strap. In the second photo below, I'm pointing to where I will cut the green slide fabric.

5. Now, on the right side of the strap fabric (brown), pin the slide fabric (green) cut end to cut end. Sew the fabric slide to the strap fabric just where you see the pins.

6. Once you have sewn on the slide, refold the long sides of your strap and press. Now, with wrong sides together, fold your strap in half. You will now edgestitch the strap. Sew down one long end and when you reach the fabric slide, stitch close, but do not sew over it. Then, sew down the other side of the strap. I've used green thread for this step in hopes you can see the stitches. In the last photo in this step, I am pointing to where I sewed across the strap near the slide.

7. Repeat the steps in order to make the second strap. It should look exactly like the first!

8. Now you are going to "stack" the slides. To do this, lay one strap with the top of the slide up. Take the other strap and lay it with the slide touching the table surface, or down. Look at the above photo and imagine the slide on the first strap was facing down. This is the position you'll want in order to insert one end of one strap into the slide of the other strap. Repeat for the other end.

If you've done this correctly, one slide will appear "upside down." In other words, you'll see the backside of one slide while the other will appear "right side." Now just attach your strap, which is now just one (you started with two), to your bag in whatever method you want!

I hope this all makes better sense. Study an old purse or bag that has an adjustable strap in order help you get a visual perspective, which is sometimes hard with only photos and words.

I'm Back!

I'm back from the Buffalo National River, the only national river in America! Arkansas is one of the most beautiful States and this river is gorgeous. Imagine canoeing in a crystal clear aquarium. That's the Buffalo! Camping here was nice, too. It was also a lot of work! It was worth it, though. I am pretty sure I lost at least10 pounds in sweat! I also and got a bit of a suntan, which has proven my theory that tan fat looks a lot better than super white fat!

If you ever get to the Buffalo, be prepared for going off grid during your entire trip. Zero cell phone service, zero internet access! The first day was pretty rough, trust me..especially for a city gal like myself! Thanks for hanging with me while I was away. I have so many emails to respond to and so many blogs to catch up on, which is what I'm going to do after I hit the shower! Did I mention the campsite had no showers? YUK!

While I'm getting five days of grime off me, please have a look at the first dress posted for June's Dress Up! I know the Asian theme is going to be great!

My Rubens Inspired Dress & Artful Bag!

Ok, first, this was a hard challenge. The dresses Rubens painted were usually ornate and frilly. He seemed to either go all in decadence, lace, and frills or nothing..ladies in various states of undress...in all their glory. Anyway, I managed to finish my dress, which is based on Portrait of the Marchesa Brigida Spinola Doria, 1606.

My photo didn't turn out great. I painted card stock shimmery silver and white and then accented with strips of gold and red glitter paper. Honestly, I'm glad May is over because I am really excited about June's theme!

I finished my bag for Frosted Petunias Artful Bag Challenge. I used a piece of stationary paper to create a summer clutch. I even used a real snap for the closure!

Asian art! Isn't this painting, called, Young Woman With a Lily, just gorgeous? It was finished in 1943 and painted, in oil, by Vietnamese artist, To Ngoc Van. I guess I have been inspired, of late, by Asian themed images and fabric for the little bags I've been sewing. Asian art is very wide ranging. Don't just think Japanese and Chinese. Travel to Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia and Korea...even India! Here are a few examples to get your creative juices flowing.

First Magnolia Bloom This Season

Well, it's summer, officially, I think. It's Memorial Day weekend..the start of the swimsuit, flop flop, and tanning (or baking) season! I'm ready for BBQ, swimming, and boating! I am so ready for my VACATION! My vacation begins NOW and I am going camping, canoeing, and hiking (maybe not the hiking)! I'll be off the grid for a few days...no internet, no phone, no signal. I'm actually a bit anxious about all that, but I'm convinced it will do me good. I need good right now.

I've been busy at work and gearing up for vacation, but I've finished a few more bags for my "soon to be opened" Etsy shop. I used the same image transfer technique using the gel medium for the front images. I used beads on the peacock bag and embroidery thread on the others. What do you think of them?

The Age Of Wisdom?

From The Graphics Fairy

So I've been a part of the Over 40 scene for a little over a month now. I'm still not feeling the wisdom. Quite the opposite, really. Instead of ah ha moments, I've had ah what? moments. Sorry, no epiphanies yet. I haven't given up hope, however. I am fairly certain I'll have an Oprah moment sometime soon. In the meantime, I'll keep plugging along at work, home, and in my sewing room!

The last bag I made is just a simple clutch or wristlet. I've used the Japanese ladies image I used on a toiletry bag, but I embroidered on it a bit differently. I really like this image and it transfers to the fabric pretty easily. I used a really pretty Asian inspired fabric for the back of the wristlet.

My thoughts and prayers go out to those in the path of the mighty Mississippi. Please keep all those in mind as that powerful river, and its tributaries, crest in the coming days.

A Necessary Tutorial Update and More Bags

You know it's Spring in the Mid West when the temperature fluctuates 40 degrees up and down in a few days! Another big clue is observing the Wal-Mart crowd. Half in shorts, flip flops and the odd muscle (loosely said) shirt. The other half clad in winter coats and scarves! Last weekend we turned on the A/C and I got a sunburn. Today I donned my heavy coat when I went to work and am now wishing my husband would not have turned off our gas! Damn you, Al Gore!

I got a bit of sewing done since my last post. I'm hoping to have my Etsy Shop up and running by the end of May. Fingers crossed! Here are a few of the bags I finished this week:

After printing both these images onto transparencies and then transferring them to fabric for the bags using gel medium, I embroidered certain areas, like the pin up gal's shoes. The other day I was trying to explain to a friend how to transfer images to fabric. I told her to read the tutorial I had written. I was mortified when I clicked over to review my tutorial and realized that I had left out an important step in this process! I had totally omitted the part about applying the gel medium! So, if you've read my tutorial and wondered...what? I've written up and hopefully explained how to apply the gel so you can achieve the best results! Remember, this process is is not perfect...and that's what is so great! You will never get the same results twice! In other words, the resulting image on your fabric will not look like you printed it directly onto the fabric via a computer printer. You are transferring a printed image onto the fabric by hand. Therefore, even if you use the same image twice, they will not turn out exactly the same. That's what makes whatever you make with your image so unique!

Family Fun

I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and Mother's Day if celebrated! I had a pretty great Mother's Day and weekend. The weather was glorious albeit a bit windy. I spent Mother's Day with my husband and littlest daughter at a festival in a nearby town. It was full of freebie foods, games, and rides...well, no mechanical rides. These rides involved horses and buggies. The picture above is of us while riding in (or is it on) a stage coach. It was fun and bumpy. I cannot imagine traveling across the country in one of those! I guess I would have been stuck on the East coast as I am quite sure my back would not have allowed me to migrate West!

I didn't get one thing sewn this weekend, but I'm not too upset about that since I had such a great time Saturday and Sunday. I started a new project today. I'm pretty excited about it. It involves another vintage image. I've already transferred the image onto my fabric and I am now sorting out how to embellish it. I'll keep you posted. Oh, and I mailed off the mixed media piece I made last week. I took this photo, which turned out better, prior to posting.

It should get to England by the end of next week. I cannot wait until it arrives. I am positive she's going to love it!

Please don't forget to post your May Dress. The Rubens inspired dresses are fantastic! I just wish being Rubensesque was in still in! I am sure I would be a 10! Sidenote: After looking at the family photo at the top of this post, I've determined that, with the exception of the goatee, my husband and I are looking more alike with every passing day! Does this happen to all married couples? It also appears I have a death grip on my purse. Just noticed that.

I hope everyone had a super week! It's been a long and busy one for me. I'm back in rehab and I'm pretty sure my therapist finished first in torture training at CIA because I am feeling the burn today for sure! I know the exercise will do my knee good, but wow my entire body is killing me!!

Here in America, Mother's Day is this Sunday. Since my mom died about 6 1/2 years ago, it's not a holiday that I especially look forward to celebrating. May is also my mom's birthday month. Oh, and I don't have a grandmother still living, either. Okay, no pity party here..well, maybe a little one, but I do know a wonderful lady who is my other mother. Anita took care of me when I lived with her and her family in England when I was an introverted, timid, awkward teen. She called me, "Flower," "Petal," and "Sunshine." She taught me to open up and live out loud. She laughed at me and with me. I respected and appreciated her so much that when I got older and had my first daughter, I sent her to live with her when she was an introverted, timid, awkward teen, too!

I think about Anita and her whole clan all the time. I miss her and love her "heaps." (as she says). She lives in one of my favorite places on earth..on the Yorkshire coast. One of my best memories is when we went to the beach on one hot July day. It was almost hot enough to get into the water! I said, almost! I decided to make her a present keeping the beach theme in mind. I transferred the three beach gals image onto an 8X10 painted canvas and then highlighted the image with paint and colored pencils. I stamped the Emerson quote and glued on real shells for a top banner and also used shell stamps and of course a little glitter here and there. I wish my photo would have turned out better, but by the time I finished, my light was gone! Yes, I'm impatient! I'll be sending this out on Monday. I really hope she likes it. May 11th is my mom's birthday. Today is my sister's birthday. She's a mom, too. I made her a little make up bag using the gel medium transfer method onto fabric. I've used this same image on another bag, but this time I used gold, hot pink, and green to embroider areas of the umbrella, hat and ice cream. I've already mailed this off to her. I sure hope she likes it!

Japanese Fabric and Zippy Bags!

I'm in love. True. I'm in love with Japanese fabric. I feel a tad silly, though, since I'm not really sure what makes "Japanese" fabric different or better, but whatever...I think it's awesome! I bought a yard of Etsuko Fuyura designed Echino fabric to make a bag for my daughter. She picked out the bicycle pattern. I followed Simplicity Sweet Pea Pattern 2205 for the bag, although I made the strap longer so she can actually wear it as a messenger bag as she rides her bike to and from her classes. My daughter wasn't keen on the flap, so I opted for a magnetic snap in the open top. I found the pattern really easy to follow and would recommend it to anyone wanting a pleated mid-sized bag! I found the fabric scrumptious and so easy to work with. It's just too bad that it's so damned expensive! Here are a couple more views..YUM:

I know one way to keep myself in Japanese linen...sell a lot of these little bags!

I made this little zippy bag for a friend. She loved it so much, she wanted two more just like it! I used linen-like fabric for the front and a pattern fabric for the back. I transferred the image of the Beach Ladies to the front fabric using a transparency and gel medium. I then embroidered simple lines to embellish each ladies' swimsuit. I feel "less is more" here, which, like randomness, is actually harder to accomplish than it seems it would be. Anyhoo, I really like how the bags turned out and will be making more in this small size, which is perfect for a few personal toiletries or some makeup, as well as medium and larger sizes! Yes, I so need to get going on opening my Etsy Shop!!!

What's Your Bag?

I guess I'm still thinking of The Charleston, super cool cigarette holders, and flappers because I kept this Art Deco theme going when I created the above ATC for this month's Artful Bag Challenge. My swap partner is Wendy from Wendy's Adventures in Wonderland. I just sent her the card; I hope she likes it! Be sure to click over to Frosted Petunias to check out the other "bag" ATCs!

Speaking of bags, I have been experimenting with my own design for a small gadget/personal items/make up bag. I'm pretty happy with the size and shape. I've transfered images (using gel medium) to a few of the bags and then embellished the image with beads, sequins, or just embroidery...like this one:

For the record, I've never embroidered before. What do you think? One last word on bags...look at the awesome fabric I bought over the weekend! It's Echino and too expensive to mess up! My plan is to make a bag for my daughter. Wish me luck!

If It's Not Baroque, Don't Fix It!

Get ready to dress to impress...May's Dress Up is going for Baroque! Yep, the artist for May is none other than Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). Rubens, a Flemish Baroque painter, is known for his "extravagant style that emphasized movement, color, and sensuality." He painted landscapes, altar pieces, mythological subjects and portraits. Think gold, large, heavy fabrics, and lace.

There were some great suggestions, including Japanese art and the works of Gauguin. Both of which will be themes in the coming months! There is still time to post any April dresses still out there. Just click HERE to see the Art Deco dresses and to post yours!

Angels, Punks, Strawberries, and Friends.

First, thanks for all the birthday well wishes! Second, I can't believe I didn't have any takers for answering my age question! I am not sure what to think about that...should I feel really old? Is it taboo for women of a certain age (like me now) to talk about their age? Years ago I remember hearing some Oprah guest talk about how she felt her 40's were her "best years." Somehow she felt wiser, confident, and knew who and what she wanted out of her life. Really? I can say, now that I am, according to my daughter, officially over 40, I really don't feel any wiser or more "secure in skin." Granted, I have only been part of the mature scene for four days. Maybe I should give it a few more days..maybe two weeks? In the meantime, have a look at this awesome gift I got today:

I got to meet, in person, blogger friend, Dee Dee today! Dee Dee does all sorts of crafts and she made this angel for me out of metal and glass! It's wonderful and I'm so happy that I got to meet her in person! We've both participated in the mug mat swap and are regulars in the Blissful ATC Swap. Here is a picture of us at lunch today:

Speaking of the Blissful ATC Swap, I received this card from my swap partner, Marlene. April's theme is "Steam Punk." Marlene's card is fabulous. I love it. Thanks Marlene!

This was my first time doing anything Steam Punk. The image is from the The Graphics Fairy. I transferred the image to a piece of card stock using the gel medium/clear mailing label method. I then adhered this piece to the background piece which I had painted using a stencil a la sequin rubbish. Never did that before. I really like how it turned out. I hope Marlene likes it!

I've also been working on testing a pattern for Stephanie from Toastie Studio. Stephanie has designed a pattern for a shopping tote that folds (or scrunches) up and then is stuffed inside a strawberry. Her design is really cool and I just love how my strawberry turned out.

A Little Tweaking...and a Birthday Giveaway!

Why is it that the weekends seem to go by so quickly? Maybe this accounts for my lack of productivity? Or maybe I've just enjoyed myself a lazy birthday weekend?? Yep, my husband and I have thrown our diets out the window in celebration of both our birthdays. Friday night: Hawaiian pizza plus two different dessert pizzas! Saturday night: supper out at Longhorn...including fried cheesecake for dessert! Back on plan tomorrow (boo hiss).

I did get a bit of sewing done this weekend. I'm still tweaking the wallet I made last weekend. I've made two additional prototypes, but I'm not happy with either. The main problem is making the pockets secure enough to hold onto cards snuggly. I've experimented with interfacing and size. For this last wallet, I've placed fairly stiff interfacing on the wrong side of the outer fabric as well as on the fabrics for the pockets. I thought placing the interfacing on the wrong sides of the pockets as well as making the wallet smaller, overall, would do the trick. It didn't. When shaken, the cards will fall out. I might try one or two more changes, but if they don't work, I'll scrap this shaped wallet altogether. I do like the fabrics, however. I used a snap this time and the button on the outside is purely decorative. I may have placed the snap a little low.

I also came up with a new template for a little zip pouch. I made the template out of card stock and then cut outside fabric and lining fabric using this as a guide. I made a little "belt" in the center using a vintage buckle I found months ago during one of my Flea Market Fridays. Like the snap, I may have put this little gem a bit low, but it's still cute. I will be tweaking this "pattern," too...but for now it works.

I am not divulging my age (officially tomorrow's the day). If you want to do some homework (by finding a post where I've "confessed" my age), I'll send you a piece of birthday cake! Well, not real cake, of course, but leave me a comment with the age I will be tomorrow and I'll send you something sweet!

Oh, the lilacs came out of my yard this morning. Aren't they gorgeous? The smell divine. LOVE THEM!!

What do you think? I made up this quick wallet Sunday afternoon. I got the idea to make a "side" folding wallet after once again messing up my measurements for a checkbook cover/tri-fold wallet. Eyeballing is not measuring! Anyway, I think it's pretty cute, but I'm not a big fan of the elastic closure. I just think it looks a bit cheesy...like no one would know that is a recycled ponytail holder! Call this a prototype then. I shall make another wallet minus the elastic...how about velcro? Too little boyish? Accepting suggestions!

Unfortunately, I didn't get much sewing done this weekend. Besides the above wallet, I managed to make a sleep mask for my daughter. I'm not sure why she wanted one, especially since she sleeps with the hall light on, but I promised her I'd make one, so I did.

I found the directions for this mask at Wolf and Willow. There was a PDF pattern available, which came in very handy. I modified the pattern just a bit by drawing the closed eyes onto the fabric with a fabric marker instead of cutting out and sewing black cotton to the pink mask. All and all it was a pretty quick and easy project!

Sadly, I didn't get a purse done for myself this weekend! I'm struggling with finding a pattern I really like. Again, I'm all ears for suggestions!

Happy Saturday! I hope everyone is doing great! Personally, it's been one heck of a week for me! I've been busier than ever and just hope to enjoy a creatively quiet weekend. I do have a few "to dos" to get done including completing my Art Deco April Dress! Be sure to have a look at the dresses already posted HERE.

Besides my paper dress, I do want to get some more sewing done. I've been working hard on card wallets, box bags, and zip pouches. I hope to slip in making a new purse for myself sometime during the weekend, too! Is that selfish? Don't answer that! For some new purse inspiration, I've been doing a bit of web surfing. Shamrocks in April

Hi everyone! I hope you all are well. Just a quick post today to show you the awesome ATC I received from my Treasure Barn ATC Swap partner, Nichole. The theme was shamrocks. I really love this card. It is my first and only St. Patrick's Day-ish card! Unfortunately, Nichole doesn't have her blog up and running yet, but feel free to leave her a shout out right here! Here is the card I sent to her:

This was my first attempt at a St. Pat's-ish theme. I hand painted the background and the shamrock in the right corner. I affixed the image I downloaded from The Graphics Fairy. I then put a few coats of glossy ModPodge and of course glitter! I hope Nichole likes it!

I've been hard at work at work as well as on building an inventory for my yet to be opened Etsy shop. Here is a card wallet I made the other day.

I did a little free motion stitching on the outside of the wallet. What do you think? Randomness is actually hard...isn't it?
